2D Shape Attributes of Polygons and Quadrilaterals Review

03/26/2019

What is the difference between a 2D shape and a 3D shape?

2D stands for 2 dimensional. It has the dimensions of length and a width, but no depth, which makes it a flat shape.

3D stands for 3 dimensional. It has dimensions of length, width and depth.

What is a polygon and what is not a polygon?

A polygon meets the following requirements:

  • It is 2D
  • It is a closed shape (No open sides)
  • It has all straight sides (No curves)

What is the difference between a regular and irregular polygon?

A regular polygon is a polygon that has all sides of the same length and all angles of equal measure.

An irregular polygon is a polygon that does not have all sides of the same length and all angles of equal measure.

How to classify polygons based on the number of sides?

Polygons are classified into categories based on the number of sides of the shape.

  • A triangle has 3 sides
  • A quadrilateral has 4 sides
  • A pentagon has 5 sides
  • A hexagon has 6 sides
  • An octagon has 8 sides

What are the different types of quadrilaterals?

A quadrilateral by definition has 4 sides and 4 angles.

For classifying quadrilaterals, the category of quadrilaterals can be broken down into subcategories based on side lengths, parallel sides, and angle measurements.

Square

  • All sides are equal length
  • Opposite sides are parallel
  • All angles are equal

Rectangle

  • Opposite sides are equal length
  • Opposite sides are parallel
  • All angles are equal

Rhombus (Diamond)

  • All sides are equal length
  • Opposite sides are parallel
  • Opposite angles are equal

Parallelogram

  • Opposite sides are equal length
  • Opposite sides are parallel
  • Opposite angles are equal

Trapezoid

  • Only one set of parallel sides
